The Best Time to Visit Angus: A Seasonal Guide
Angus is quietly one of Scotland's best year-round destinations. A month-by-month look at what each season offers — and which one suits the kind of stay you're after.

Angus is one of the rare corners of Scotland where the answer to when should I visit isn't "July, obviously". The coast is at its best in May and October. The countryside changes character five times a year. The golf is better in shoulder season. The lodge weekend that suits a couple in February is not the one that suits a family in August, and that's the useful framing for planning a trip.
Here's a month-by-month read on what each season actually offers — and what kind of stay it tends to suit.
Spring · March to May
The countryside wakes up slowly. Snowdrops in late February, daffodils through March, bluebells in the woods near Glamis in early May. The Angus coast is at its emptiest before the schools break for summer.
Weather is the variable. March can hand you a clear blue twelve-degree afternoon followed by a sleet shower thirty minutes later. By mid-May the temperatures stabilise — fourteen to eighteen most days, light to nine in the evening. Pack layers and a proper waterproof.
Best for: couples wanting quiet weekends without the summer crowd; walkers and photographers; early-season golf at Carnoustie before the wind picks up.
Summer · June to August
Long evenings are the headline. Light until ten-thirty in late June, the famous Scottish gloaming, hot tub at midnight without a torch. The Angus coast is busy in patches — Broughty Ferry on a Saturday, Lunan Bay in school holidays — but Carmyllie itself stays quiet.
Mid-June to late August is school-holiday season. Family stays dominate; expect to book six to eight weeks ahead for weekends. The Open Championship years (Carnoustie hosts on a roughly four-to-six-year rotation) tighten this further and we suggest reserving twelve months out.
Best for: families, longer stays, day trips up the coast or inland to the Cairngorms; outdoor cooking, late evenings on the fire pit.
Autumn · September to November
The best time of year to visit, in our quietly held opinion. September has summer's warmth without the crowd. October turns the woods at Glamis and around Dundee to copper and rust. November is properly cool and very quiet — the season to come if what you want is uninterrupted time, with the hot tub working harder.
Carnoustie in October is widely considered the best month to play the course — wind dies down, fewer summer visitors, the fairways still firm. Our golf-weekend piece goes into the detail.
Best for: serious golfers, couples wanting a long weekend without it being busy, photographers chasing autumn light.
Winter · December to February
Quiet season. Frost on the fields most mornings from late November through early March, occasional snow on the higher ground inland, very rarely on the coast. Sunset by quarter to four in midwinter, which sounds bleak but isn't — long evenings indoors, fire pit lit by half past five, hot tub steaming.
The lodges were designed with this in mind. Underfloor heating in the bathrooms, log burners that hold heat overnight, blackout linen in the bedrooms for properly dark sleep. February tends to be our quietest month and one of our most-booked by repeat guests, which tells its own story.
Best for: proper switch-off weekends; couples; anyone who's tired and just wants to not be where they've been for the last six weeks.
